E-mail Britain is a new archive created by the British Library and Windows Live Hotmail to save an snap-shot of modern life for future generations, through our e-mails.

E-mail Britain is interested in e-mails that fall into the following categories:

  1. Life changers – job offers, marriage proposals etc.
  2. Complaints – public transport, poor customer service etc.
  3. Spam – the best (or worst) spam emails received.
  4. Love and romance – romantic emails which tugged at the heartstrings.
  5. Humorous emails – funny forwards, office banter, jokes etc.
  6. Everyday emails – exchanging recipes, organising nights out etc.
  7. News – good and bad news, births, illness, accidents etc.
  8. World around you – emails/views on topical events, news from around the world etc.
  9. Tales from abroad – long distance emails from far flung places.

This has never been done before. If you think one of you e-mails deserves a place in history all you have to do is forward the e-mail to email@emailbritain.co.uk, with the category it falls into in the subject box. There are a few conditions, like no offensive e-mails and respect for the privacy and confidentiality of people mentioned in the e-mails (all 3rd parties must be informed, all surnames removed etc). You can read more information here and here. But hurry, you only have til the end of May.

Wow this is a really good idea. Finally, archiving of other internet media such as emails is becoming a reality. Up until now, it’s been websites and other digital content such as video and audio files, images, etc…

Thanks for the heads up! 🙂
