“Hey, where’s my comment?”

Yes, exactly. Unfortunately i have had to enforce a strict comments policy here on It’s A Free World, Baby for a few reasons:

One is the amount of new smart-spam that has been appearing. It appears people now manually write spam comments that at least try to be generally about the article they are posted on, alas terrible grammar is still included. This may be incorrect. If so, please enlighten me.

The second reason is WordPress‘s privacy policy. I scoured the forums for a way to block specific IPs, but it appears that this is not a feature for wordpress.com hosted blogs. But don’t get me wrong, Akismet anti-spam is great i think. Before this new smart-spam started appearing i had never had a comment slip through the Akismet net. I would recommend you add this list of spam words to your filter, you’ll notice a difference. I have also noticed/read a link between allowing pings and increased number of spam comments. I feel, with the protection of Akismet, the pros of pinging outweigh the cons.

So, what happens now. ALL comments will get moderated. As long as you not a spammer, no matter whether your comment is positive or negative towards the article, it will get approved. I check my e-mail regularly, so comments should appear pretty quickly. Hope everyone agrees that this is best compromise available at present, if anyone has an alternative i would appreciate hearing from you.

Oh, and if you receive any comments from these IPs, 125.212.91.19 or 83.125.32.96, it is smart spam.

Hey thanks for the heads up on the anti spam ideas – spam is a constant in the backside! Good luck with the spam. lol.

ip’s can be spoofed, cloaked, anonymized. so ip banning wouldn’t solve much of the problem. open proxies are common source of this. good luck!
