Sell your music online

I have just read on the BBC News website that a new website from 7 Digital, called the Indie Store, has been set up whereby unsigned bands can distribute their music digitally to over 20 countries, and make money from it. This is what they say you get:

  • Multi-format file support including iPod and Windows Media formats (upload one file – we'll do the rest)
  • Up to 80% revenue share
  • Previews, blog, picture gallery, tour dates
  • indiestore.com/yourchoice URL
  • Non-exclusive, sell your tracks on other download services
  • You retain 100% of the rights to your music

But there are also a few points they fail to mention. If you take the free level of membership you can only sell 4 songs at a time, and the maximum cut you get is 70%. Also no DRM encryption is applied to you music. And finally your song is not applicable for the top 40. If you pay £75, your membership becomes Pro. You can sell upto 20 songs at a time, receive up to an 80% cut, can have optional DRM encryption applied to your songs and are applicable for the singles chart in 20 countries.

I am contemplating it, but the lack of DRM and the lower cut that comes with the free membership isn't exactly tempting. I'm not sure if £75 is a worthy investment with a beta project either. Anywho, i thought i'd spread the word as i'm sure there are many decent artists out there now ready to get a foot on the music industry ladder.
