The fine line between forums and comments pages

I don't know if it is just me, but of late i have been seeing comments pages overtaking forums as the number one spot to have a world wide slagging match. I always thought, uh hum, "discussions" took place in forums where they can be tightly moderated to keep the environment safe and free-flowing. But the number of websites and blogs i have read recently that seem to have visitors that come to argue via the comments page.

Its like starting a fight in a church, yeh the arguement may be necessary (no religious connotations intended) but "time and a place"? The people that take part in this bizarre hobby fail to grasp the idea of having a comments feature. To my understanding the feature is put their by the author/publisher to receive feedback on the article. Yes, sometimes these comments may not be in favour of the article, and therefore a few conflicting views may be expected. But when the personal remarks and irrelevant facts start flying, it crosses over to a misconceived discussions-forum in my eyes. And indeed when a new visitor to a website sees a new article with 40 comments, and assumes the content is controversial and of questionable calibre, only to find that the article is brief and that some guy, you know, one of those that saves up enough bus money during the week just to go to town and complain about issues that don't concern him as his form of 'release', didn't like the fact that a differing opinion existed that in his reactionary eyes could not exist in this diverse medium we call the WWW, has lowered himself to picking on your grammar. Leave the slanging matches 'til the forums, where people can sign-up to battle in a pre-prepared and intentional arena. Don't litter interesting articles across the web with half-witted and needless snide-jibes.
